Notion’s Biggest Problem (Finally Solved?)

database permissions secret leak

Hey — it’s Rames

Quick question: When you first downloaded your favorite social media app, did you have any idea how much time you'd end up spending on it? If someone had told you the total hours, would you go back in time and hit pause? If the answer is yes, what’s stopping you from deleting the app…right now?

This isn’t a rant against social media. It’s a gentle nudge.

Just because an app is… [continue reading]

3 Tips

1/ Is Notion fixing database permissions?

Notion’s biggest issue over the years? Granular database permissions—or the lack of them. If you’re new here, let me explain why this is a big deal.

Imagine you’re an agency owner with client portals in Notion. You want a single master Tasks database that pulls tasks from every client portal. This would allow you to display only relevant tasks in each client’s portal.

The problem? Notion doesn’t let you share just a filtered view of a database. If you share the database, clients can see all tasks, including ones that belong to other clients. That’s a hard no.

People have tried workarounds, but none have been foolproof.

Until now.

Ten days ago, Notion shared Sam Catania’s presentation at Make With Notion. At the 1:25 mark, Sam demonstrates a new property-type called Permissions. It’s tied to database items and can be edited using automations.

Thomas Frank, who first spotted this, made a great video about it. Sam even commented on the video to confirm that they are currently working on this issue.

Here’s the kicker: this might finally fix a problem that’s been around since Notion’s early days. I’ve discussed this with many clients—especially agency and studio owners—and it’s often the one thing stopping them from fully embracing Notion.

Fingers crossed this feature gets polished and rolled out soon. It’s been a long time coming.
